Greetings
I'm Stuart Steidle, a budding multimedia specialist with backgrounds in journalism, geography, and cultural anthropology. My galleries here are works in progress that point to, but do not encompass, my work in visual media and storytelling.
After 15+ years of carrying cameras by my side, I recently pushed the envelope during my graduate studies by creating an immersive scientific field trip that explains the use of prescribed fire with 360º video and virtual reality software. Stories have always been relational, built upon empathy, perspective taking, walking in another set of shoes. Immersive technology can amplify these feelings of intimacy and involvement with characters, across place and across time.
Is that not the goal of most visual journalism? Or of the geographer with their layered appreciation for place?
Past research
As a member of Dr. Melissa Lucash’s Lab and the Visualizing Forest Futures project, I used 360º video and VR software to document and explain fire-induced habitat restoration of once open landscapes in northern Wisconsin. I coordinated with forest service personnel and other researchers to tell an immersive story of transforming forests back toward their pre-European character. You can read a sampling of my first tour to these sites here.
A video sample of what the finished product looked like will be uploaded shortly (as of 12/26/22).
Future collaborations
I would love to bring your vision to life through my skills in photography, videography, reporting, interviewing, audio mixing, and information synthesis.
Please get in touch with any enquiries or comments.
Thank you
